More Drills at Home?!

By consistently practicing these serving drills at home, you'll develop better control, power, and accuracy in your volleyball game. Remember, the key to improvement is regular and focused practice, so incorporate these drills into your routine to see noticeable progress.

Importance of Serving

Serving is a crucial aspect of volleyball, as it initiates each play and can greatly influence the momentum of the game. There are two ways to serve a ball over the net. There is an underhand serve and an overhand serve. Here at Ronin we strongly encourage working on an overhand serve to complex your serve. For these drills, we will be going over an overhand serve. To execute a successful serve, three key elements are essential: Toss, contact, and speed. Mastering these components ensures that the serve not only gets the ball over the net but also challenges the opposing team's ability to return it effectively.

  1. Toss: The toss is the most important part of a serve. Without a proper and consistent toss, there will never be a successful serve. Here are some elements to create a consistent toss

  • Tossing the ball a step infront

  • Tossing the ball to the dominant side of your body (Lining up with your dominant shoulder)

  • Tossing an inch above your highest reach

2. Contact: Having strong contact pushes the ball to be hard to receive as well as makes it more consistent. Having weak contact gives an unsure possibility of the ball going over the net. Here are some elements to create consistent contact each time

  • Flexing hand big (fingers spread)

  • ball should only touch with your palm

  • Hitting the face or middle of the ball

  • Keeping elbow high

  • Holding your finish to where you want the ball to go

3. Speed: When serving from the back of the court, it can be tough to get the ball over the net, especially for a young player who might not have the strength to put it over. When we serve, we want a fast arm swing to generate more power behind the ball.

Drills to Practice Serving at Home

Step 1: Work on your toss. Toss the ball up, step forward and let it drop infront ( 15 reps)

Step 2: Serving trap. Toss the ball along the wall, arm swing to the ball and try and catch it in your firm contact at your highest reach. (10 Reps)

Step 3: Start serving against the wall or back and forth with a partner

Benefits:

  1. Improved Serve Consistency: By breaking down the serve into manageable components, players can focus on each aspect, leading to a more consistent and reliable serve.

  2. Better Ball Control: Practicing the toss and contact point enhances overall ball control, reducing unforced errors during serves.

  3. Increased Serve Power and Accuracy: Focusing on arm strength and swing mechanics results in more powerful and accurate serves.

  4. Enhanced Confidence: Repeated practice builds confidence, making players more comfortable and effective when serving in competitive situations.
